Meet Thomas Arnold, DDS

A descendant of three generations of health professionals (his grandfather was one of the first African American dentists in the South), Dr. Arnold never considered any other occupation. He grew up “hanging around the dental office,” watching his grandfather work while discussing community politics. His father was a general medical practitioner in Detroit, Michigan. According to Dr. Arnold, “In my practice, one of my primary goals is to eliminate the fear patients have toward dentistry and to present the discipline in a fun and enjoyable way. Dr. Happy Tooth is my way of presenting the issue of dentistry to kids in a non-threatening environment. It also presents dental hygiene as a pleasant learning experience.”

Dr. Arnold attended the same college as his parents, Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, and went on to Meharry Medical College, the alma mater for his father and grandfather. Good fortune was with him when he was accepted into San Francisco’s Mt. Zion residency program in 1972. Mt. Zion has one of the leading residency programs for dentists in the country and only accepts three graduates per year. Dr. Arnold made a name for himself in the Bay Area when, in 1974, he teamed up with Dr. Collins, author of Your Teeth, a handbook on personal dental care, and Dr. William Pitman, the first African American dentist to open a practice in the East Bay in 1930. Within a year, Dr. Arnold had over 100 patients of his own.

Today, Dr. Arnold, and his wife and dental practice partner, Dr. Wendi Wilson have over 3,000 loyal and “happy” patients. Dr. Arnold is a Fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry, on the hospital staff at Mt. Zion, Herrick, and Alta Bates, and is a member of both the National Dental Association and the Berkeley Dental Association.

Meet Daniel Chen, DDS

Dr. Chen is a compassionate dentist who loves meeting new people and developing meaningful connections with his patients. Growing up in the Bay Area as a kid with a sweet tooth, Dr. Chen is no stranger when it comes to visiting the dentist. He was lucky to be in the care of compassionate dentists who helped him overcome his fear of the dental chair and wants to do the same for his patients.

Before becoming a partner at Arnold and Wilson, he spent most of his professional and pre-professional career working with the underserved. During his undergraduate studies and after he received his DDS, Dr. Chen volunteered at a free dental clinic in Berkeley where he provided much needed dental services to the less fortunate.

His patients appreciate his easy-going demeanor and ability to work with people who are normally fearful of dentists. Dr. Chen received his bachelor’s degree in Integrative Biology from UC Berkeley before attending NYU College of Dentistry in New York. As a member of the American Dental Association, California Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry, and Berkeley Dental Society, Dr. Chen takes numerous continuing education courses every year to offer the most relevant and recent evidence-based dentistry to his patients. In his free time, Dr. Chen enjoys cooking with his wife at home and going for hikes with their pet beagle.

Meet Shelly Chen, Hygienist

My name is Shelly (Xuelu) Chen. In May 2014, I graduated from the Chabot College Dental Hygiene Program, and completed my B.S. in California State University East Bay in 2016. I have been working as a Registered Dental Hygienist in private practice since August 2014, and have accumulated over 10,000 hours of work experience. I have been known to provide excellent patient care and often receive compliments from both patients and employers. I am fully capable of utilizing my communication and patient-focused skills to provide passionate care to all, and to help my patients achieve realistic hygiene goals. I feel a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction when patients’ oral health improves as a result of my guidance. I am confident that my skills and experiences have laid a strong foundation and prepared me to provide top-quality services and exceptional care to all the patients. In closing, I take my dental career seriously and I have a great passion for what I do as a Registered Dental Hygienist.
